It sounds like the perfect combination: nutrition plus the convenience of a burger. Could a Nutri Burger be the perfect meal solution for picky eaters or those on the go?
First of all, to give a semi-official definition to what a Nutri Burger is. A Nutri Burger is a hamburger or hamburger variant that is more nutritious than those on offer at the local junky fast food outlet.
But, unfortunately, you will look in vain for a commercial outlet that has a Nutri Burger by that name in its range. Maybe if you’re very lucky or live in the right town, you might find one, but a quick flick through the internet certainly doesn’t reveal any commercial outlets.
So you’ll have to make your own Nutri Burgers. But don’t panic: you don’t have to be an expert chef or a trained dietician to make a Nutri Burger by yourself. Just a few basic ingredients, and a grill or frying pan are all you need.
First of all, go to the supermarket to get the ingredients for your Nutri Burger. If you want a basic beef mince Nutri Burger, this will mean buying lean mince (called premium mince in some stores), some eggs, lettuce, tomatoes, Edam or another low-fat cheese and some wholegrain bread. If you can’t find hamburger buns in wholemeal for your Nutri Burger, then look for buns with seeds – or else forgo the traditional bun and use bagels or slices of wholegrain bread (rye is tasty). You will also need onions, garlic, some oregano and salt. Sauces like ketchup, mustard or chutney are optional, but mustard is the best low-sugar option.
Once you’ve got your ingredients home, it’s time to get cooking for your Nutri Burger. First, chop up the onions and garlic very finely – a mixer is good here. Put these in a bowl along with the mince, a teaspoon of salt (or less – one teaspoon is about right for 400 g mince) and some oregano. You can also add other spices like chilli – for a sausage-like taste, dried sweet basil and nutmeg are great. Add the egg, or if you want a lower fat option, then just add the egg white. Add a few tablespoons of flour and stir well. This is the mix for your Nutri Burger patties.
Heat some oil (canola, soy or olive) in a frying pan or turn on the grill. You don’t need much oil for a Nutri Burger. To make the Nutri Burger patties, scoop up about a tablespoon of patty mixture and drop it into the frying pan or onto the tray of the grill, then press it flat with a spatula or fish slice. It won’t be the perfect round hamburger patty you get at a franchise, but it will fit into a bun. Cook your Nutri Burger patties for 3–4 minutes on each side.
While your Nutri Burger patties are cooking, prepare the rest of your Nutri Burger. Open up the buns and prepare the vegetables. Don’t bother shredding the lettuce – big leaves are fine and look quite attractive poking out the sides of the Nutri Burger. Slice the tomato quite thickly and, if desired, slice some more onions for onion rings. Low fat cheese slices can also be added, but for a kosher Nutri Burger, leave the cheese out.
